Social Media Credibility - Your “Whuffie”
So, here we find ourselves living in the world of Social Media. The Gap has pulled all of their traditional advertising in order to run solely on Social Media networks and many other companies are expected to join them. We know that this mode of connecting is taking over and will likely change the world we live in and how we reach people. Along with this shift, we find ourselves asking how we make this work in selling homes. The answer to that question lies in knowing how to reach people in the right way. That is right, it all comes down to your credibility on the Social Media platform.
Our research has yields a few important lessons on how you can establish social media credibility and gather more eyeballs to view your home. A few of the very basic concepts are:
1. Use Your Real Name. If you want people to find you and your home, there is no better way than using your real name. There is a temptation to use your “brand” as a user name, like listing your property’s address however the user name is not where you want to be doing your branding. Branding should be in your content and or actions. If you put your listing addresse as your profile name, it will only hurt your social media credibility. Think about it, who really wants to network with a property. Revealing who you are is the best way to establish social media credibility.
2. Use Your Real Photo. Similar to using your real name, you must reveal who you are to gain credibility in the social media world. Also, if you put pictures of your home as your profile picture, you will have lost any social media credibility that you might have had in the past. In fact, you will come across to others in the social media world as just another person who sees people as numbers that you want to acquire for the mere purpose of selling your home.
3. Complete Your Profile. As mentioned in number 1 & 2, you must completely reveal yourself to gain credibility. Social media is about being completely transparent. If you are not being truly who you are, possible connections will wonder why and you will lose credibility.
4. Connect With Everyone. Now don’t get me wrong, the large number of “Friends” or “Tweets” you establish does not necessarily mean you are more credible. But it is called “Social” media, so be social. It is important to have a “healthy” number of “followers” to show the world you network with others who value your presence.
5. Communicate. That means give, not just take. You need to be communicating with people not just broadcasting your needs. Would you walk into a party and just start demanding things from strangers? Probably not, and the fact is that Social Media is just like a big party where you are getting to know the people around you.
6. Share Before Selling. Sharing information or some type of expertise is the foundation of social media. From my perspective, every person has unique experiences that may be invaluable to others without you realizing it. So, if you are just advertising yourself or your home without sharing information, nobody will be listening. Generously share your expertise with the world. Pay It Forward!
7. Indirectly Have Information about Yourself or Your Home. The key to this is to be relevant to your audience, add value to their lives with a personal touch only you can bring to the conversation. Doing it this way, you are indirectly advertising yourself in a cutting edge way.
This approach represents a monumental change in terms of marketing. It’s no longer about driving your marketing messages to as many people as possible but rather connecting with people one at a time from a place of honesty and trust.
Real estate has always been about building trust and long-lasting relationships. Today, much of that trust-building is occurring online, but the core concepts haven’t changed.
